Once your child’s adult molars erupt, it’s crucial that they remain healthy and free of decay (i.e. cavities). Children can be more prone to tooth decay because they typically eat more sugar than the average adult. Most children’s parties, celebrations, and reward systems have some form of sugary treat involved.

Molars in particular are prone to attracting decay because they have deep grooves along the top surface of the tooth. These grooves, while they look like cracks, are completely normal and called ‘fissures’.

These fissures, while they help us to chew our food, are also areas where food and plaque can get lodged. If the food gets stuck and isn’t properly brushed away, it can cause tooth decay.

In order to prevent this from happening, a filling material, or sealant, can be used to fill in these grooves to create a smoother surface. This smoother surface prevents plaque and bacteria from getting trapped in the tooth.

So, what are Fissure Sealants?

Sealants are a protective coating which is painted onto the biting surface (and sometimes the backs) of teeth. This coating helps bacteria and plaque to slide away from the tooth, rather than getting trapped. This shields the tooth safely and effectively.

How does the Sealant get applied? Will it hurt?

The application of the sealant is quick and straightforward – and it is a pain free procedure! First the tooth will be thoroughly cleaned, a special solution is applied, and then the tooth is dried. Once dry, the sealant is applied and allowed to set – this is typically done by shining a special light onto the tooth.

How long does a fissure sealant last?

Typically, sealants last for many years, however it is important you get them checked regularly to make sure the sealant stays intact. The sealant can wear over time, and if it does it can be added to or replaced to keep tooth decay out.

When should sealants be applied to my child’s teeth?

As soon as your child’s permanent molars begin to appear you will want to talk to your dentist about sealants. This can be done during your regularly scheduled cleanings, so that the teeth can be examined and a plan of action created for your child’s teeth.

Fissure Sealants are a great preventative measure which helps decrease your child’s risk of tooth decay in their permanent molars and helps to maintain healthy oral hygiene.
