Flossing: Is It Necessary?

Posted December 12th, 2014

You brush your teeth every morning and night, and use mouth wash, that’s enough right? Wrong. While brushing thoroughly is crucial for your dental health, and mouth wash can help freshen your breath, if you aren’t flossing, you aren’t completing the job.

Think of everything you eat and drink. All those coffees, your breakfasts, lunches and dinners every day – for weeks, months and years… Every time you eat, tiny amounts of debris and plaque get wedged between your teeth.

Even if it doesn’t feel obvious, it’s there. Your toothbrush cleans most surfaces of your teeth, but it can’t get into those tiny spaces between your teeth. That’s where flossing comes in. Flossing draws out built up plaque or food particles that are caught between your teeth and gum line. It promotes healthy gums, prevents gum disease and completes the job of cleaning your teeth. read more

Fluoride in Tap Water

Posted October 25th, 2014

It’s an age old debate – is fluoride in tap water better for our kids health, or is it toxic? Ongoing studies have revealed that the average exposure an Australian child has to fluoride in tap water, is absolutely not harmful at all.

However, a lack of fluoride exposure saw an increase of 49% of children needing dental treatment.  Aside from bottled water contributing to a rise in children needing dental treatment, the increased number of children consuming soft drinks, energy drinks, lollies and processed sweetened foods regularly has also seen sky-rocketing figures of dental decay. read more

5 Tips to Help Your Child Stop Thumb Sucking

Make them think it’s their idea

Nagging your child doesn’t always work. Instead, encourage them to realize how much they have grown and changed. Show them what they have left behind, point out that they no longer use nappies, bottles, or high chairs. Praise them and ask them what else they think they should give up. If they don’t say thumb sucking, then you should suggest it.

Weaken the Habit

When you notice your child’s thumb in their mouth, try to distract them give them activities that will use both hands. This is particularly important before nap time and bedtime. Have them hold the book you are reading or hug a stuffed animal with each arm. read more

X-Rays for Children’s Teeth

Posted May 17th, 2014

Many parents are reluctant to have X-Rays taken of their children’s teeth due to concerns about the safety or necessity of the procedure. Dental X-Rays are completely safe and expose your child to the most minimal degree of radiation that is not harmful at all. Today’s advanced technology means that a tunnel-beam X-Ray is used, meaning only one specific area is exposed to the very minimal radiation. This makes it even more safe and harmless. The ability to generate X-Rays instantly thanks to technological improvements reduces the time that radiation is existent. read more

Baby Bottle Decay in Children’s Teeth

Posted April 22nd, 2014

Does your child fall asleep with a bottle of milk? While very common, this isn’t ideal for your children’s teeth. Milk is a great source of calcium and calcium is good for building strong bones and teeth. However the lactose in milk is a naturally occurring sugar. This sugar, despite being natural, can decay your children’s teeth.

The constant washing over your children’s teeth caused by sleeping with a bottle, means that your children’s teeth are basically soaking in these sugars overnight. Baby teeth have much softer enamel than adult teeth and are therefore much more prone to decay. read more

How to Prevent Tooth Decay

Posted April 2nd, 2014

You may have seen the many advertisements for Colgate’s new toothpaste – containing a ‘sugar acid neutraliser’. Colgate claims that after eight years of research, they have finally developed an ingredient that neutralises the acidic effect of sugar on teeth.

While there may have been advances in chemical technology that aid in the prevention of tooth decay, we believe that no matter what fluoride toothpaste you are using, proper brushing and flossing is the only way to prevent tooth decay. read more

Flossing for Kids

Posted November 27th, 2013

Flossing for kids may seem unnecessary, however it is a great way to start kids off with good dental habits from an early age. If flossing becomes second nature to them as children, they will carry the habit throughout their adult lives too. Flossing cleans the surfaces between the teeth, where a toothbrush simply cannot get to.

There are alternatives to flossing that can be good for kids as they are a little less dextrose than adults. These are things like picksters, flossers and floss threaders. These are all tools which clean the space between the teeth and gums, but are a little easier for small hands to use. You can purchase these items from most chemists and some supermarkets, or at Vivid Dental. If your child has braces or orthodontic appliances, flossing can be tricky – but it’s even more important. Braces and appliances can also build up plaque and bacteria if not cleaned properly. This can lead to gum disease and tooth decay. It’s crucial to use floss threaders or ‘superfloss’ to ensure your child is flossing between braces or appliances. read more

Caring for Teeth with Orthodontics

Posted September 13th, 2013

If your child or teenager is having orthodontic treatment, it can be tricky to maintain great oral health. It’s crucial that your child maintains healthy teeth and gums throughout the orthodontic treatment, as this may severely affect the outcome. Teeth that are partially covered by braces, bands and wires are particularly difficult to clean, however they are even more at risk of cavities and decay, so its imperative that your child pays extra attention to these areas. Spending an extra minute or two while brushing (3-4 minutes instead of 2 minutes) is recommended for orthodontic patients. read more

Is Fluoride Safe For Kids?

Posted July 31st, 2013

There is a lot of controversy and differing opinions surrounding the issue of fluoridation and whether or not fluoride is safe for consumption, especially for children. At Vivid Dental we highly recommend topical fluoride treatment every 3-6 months when you have your regular check-up and clean, no matter what your age is.

We also recommend that all our patients use a fluoride toothpaste at home. In some cases where decay is severe and rapid, an extra high strength fluoride toothpaste may be recommended to strengthen tooth enamel. Fluoride can be harmful if it is ingested in large quantities. Swallowing tiny amounts of fluoride in your saliva will not cause harm to you or your children, however we always teach children to spit out their toothpaste. In Australia, our tap water has fluoride in it, and this is good for teeth. If you are concerned about your child’s exposure to fluoride, please book in an appointment and have a chat to our friendly team. read more

Pulp Therapy for Children

Week 3 Kids – Pulp Therapy for Children

A pulpotamy or “pulp therapy” is a dental procedure used to treat severe decay that has affected the tooth right down to the pulp. This picture illustrates a tooth – the enamel, the dentine and the pulp inside. Decay that is not too deep can be cleaned out and filled with a composite resin filling. However as children’s teeth are weaker than adult teeth, decay can rapidly progress deep down into the pulp chamber of the tooth. When this happens, a pulpotamy is needed. read more

Don’t Let Your Fears Become Your Child’s Fears!

Posted May 31st, 2013

Do you have fears and anxieties from previous bad experiences at the dentist? You’re not the only one. Many of our adult patients suffered from traumatic or stressful experiences at the dentist or orthodontist when they were young. We are able to help you overcome these anxieties with our happy gas, our painless injections and our friendly step by step approach. However, many parents subconsciously pass their fears onto their children. Saying things like “we need to be brave at the dentist” or “you need to be a big boy at the dentist” can actually worsen your child’s experience. Kids pick up on your emotions and expressions – especially if you seem anxious or fearful. They will then assume that the dentist is a scary place where they need to be brave and prepare for painful treatments, however at Vivid, this isn’t the case. read more

Posted May 10th, 2013

Many parents have misconceptions about the importance of dental health in children. We have gathered the 5 most common children’s dental myths below, to set the record straight!

1. Cavities in kids teeth don’t matter because baby teeth fall out anyway.

This is false, but a very common misconception.  Cavities in baby teeth can actually cause permanent damage to your child’s adult teeth – even when they are under the gum. Having active decay in the mouth is never safe, so if you think your child might have decay in their teeth, bring them in. read more
