Choosing the Right Toothbrush

Do you feel overwhelmed when you walk down the toothbrush aisle? It’s not uncommon – there are a lot of options.

When it comes to picking out the best toothbrush, there are a number of factors you should consider.

Choosing the right toothbrush head

The shape of your toothbrush needs to fit the shape of your mouth in order to get the best clean possible. Consider the shape and size of a toothbrush head before you purchase. The bristles should reach your back molars comfortably and be able to cover each tooth. If your toothbrush isn’t reaching everywhere in your mouth, swap it out for a toothbrush with a different sized head – one that better fits your mouth.

Size Matters

You should always find a toothbrush that fits the size of the mouth using it. Smaller children will require smaller toothbrushes (those with smaller heads on them). In the same way that you need to choose a toothbrush head that fits you, choose one that best fits your child’s mouth.

What about the bristles?

Studies have shown that soft, round bristles are the most ideal for gently cleaning your teeth. A majority of people brush their teeth too hard, which can lead to sensitivity issues. In addition, if you brush too hard and are using a firmer bristled toothbrush, you can be doing more damage to your teeth and gums than good.

How sensitive are your teeth and gums? If you are developing a tooth sensitivity, it’s time to visit your dentist and get a softer bristled toothbrush.

Don’t scrimp on price

While the bargain “3 for $1” might seem like a great deal, think about why those toothbrushes are so cheap. It’s not because they use quality products. And you don’t know if they adhere to safety guidelines. Best to stick with a known brand; a reputable manufacturer. You use your toothbrush multiple times per day – don’t put your health at risk simply to get a better deal on a toothbrush.

And remember, your toothbrush should be changed with the changing of the seasons – every 3 months. Choose a toothbrush that fits in your hand, comfortably reaches all of your teeth, and replace it regularly.

If you can’t remember the last time you bought a new toothbrush, it’s time for a new one!
