Invisalign vs Braces: Two Great Options. One Right Answer for You.
If you’ve been thinking about straightening your teeth, you’ve probably come across the two most popular options: Invisalign clear aligners and fixed braces. Both can give you a beautifully aligned smile. Both are offered here at Vivid Dental in Five Dock. And both have real strengths — and real trade-offs.
The question isn’t which one is better. The question is: which one is better for you?
As a dental practice that offers both options, we don’t have a preference. This blog is our honest, practitioner’s guide to help you do the same.
What Is Invisalign? What Are Fixed Braces?
Invisalign® Clear Aligners
Invisalign uses a series of custom-made, transparent plastic trays — called aligners — that you wear over your teeth. Each aligner is slightly different, gently guiding your teeth into their ideal position step by step. You swap to a new aligner every one to two weeks, and the treatment progresses from there.
Key facts: Each aligner is created from a precise 3D digital scan of your mouth — no messy impressions needed. You wear them for 20–22 hours per day and remove them only to eat, drink (anything other than water), brush, and floss. Treatment generally takes 6 to 18 months.
Fixed Braces
Fixed braces use metal or ceramic brackets bonded directly to each tooth, connected by an archwire that applies steady, continuous pressure to move teeth into alignment. They’re called “fixed” because, unlike aligners, you can’t take them out — they work around the clock.
Key facts: Brackets are available in traditional silver metal or more discreet tooth-coloured ceramic. You’ll visit us every 4–8 weeks for adjustments. Treatment typically runs 12 to 24 months depending on the complexity of your case.

What Can Each Option Actually Fix?
Both Invisalign and fixed braces can treat a wide range of alignment issues. But there are some important distinctions.
Conditions both options can treat:
- Crooked or crowded teeth
- Gaps between teeth
- Mild to moderate overbite, underbite, or crossbite
- Relapse after previous orthodontic treatment
Where fixed braces have the edge:
For more complex orthodontic cases — significant crowding, severe bite problems, twisted or rotated teeth, or jaw misalignment — fixed braces give us a level of precision and control that clear aligners can’t always match. The archwire applies force in three dimensions, which is particularly valuable for cases requiring more complex tooth movement.
Where Invisalign has the edge:
Invisalign has advanced significantly over the years and can now treat most mild to moderate alignment issues very effectively. For image-conscious adults and teens who want a discreet option, or for patients with demanding professional or social lives, Invisalign offers a real lifestyle advantage without compromising results.

Important note from our team Invisalign is not suitable for every case. After your initial consultation, we’ll give you our honest recommendation — even if it’s not the option you walked in hoping to hear about. Our goal is the best outcome for your teeth, not the easiest sell. |
How Your Lifestyle Should Influence Your Decision
Clinical factors matter enormously — but so does your life. Here’s how to think through the lifestyle side of the decision.
Consider Invisalign if you:
- Have an active social or professional life and want a discreet solution
- Play a wind instrument or a contact sport (aligners can be removed)
- Want the flexibility to remove your appliance for special occasions
- Are highly motivated and will reliably wear aligners 20–22 hours per day
- Have a wedding, event, or travel coming up and want to plan around it
Consider fixed braces if you:
- Prefer a set-and-forget approach — no compliance worries
- Have a complex case that requires greater precision of movement
- Are treating a child or teenager who may struggle to maintain aligner wear
- Want consistent progress without relying on discipline to wear a device
- Have tried clear aligners before and experienced relapse

A word about teenagers Compliance is everything with Invisalign. The aligners only work when they’re in. For many teens, fixed braces remove the variable entirely — they’re always working, regardless of how consistently your teenager remembers to put their aligners back in after lunch. That said, some teens are excellent candidates for Invisalign. We assess this on a case-by-case basis. |
From the Dentist’s Chair: How We Actually Help You Decide
At Vivid Dental, our founder Dr. Caroline Nguyen has been helping patients navigate this exact decision for well over a decade. Here’s what that consultation process actually looks like.
Step 1: We assess your teeth, bite, and jaw
We start with a comprehensive clinical assessment — examining your bite, jaw alignment, degree of crowding or spacing, and any underlying oral health issues. Some problems, like jaw misalignment or severe rotation, simply aren’t ideal for clear aligners. We’ll tell you this upfront.
Step 2: We take a 3D digital scan
Using advanced scanning technology, we create a precise digital model of your teeth. For Invisalign, this forms the basis of your custom treatment plan. For braces, it helps us map out the movement required. It also means — in the case of Invisalign — we can actually show you a digital preview of what your smile could look like after treatment.
Step 3: We talk about your life
Your treatment should fit your life, not the other way around. We ask about your work, your hobbies, whether you play sport or an instrument, whether you have a major event coming up. These things genuinely influence which option will serve you best.
Step 4: We give you an honest recommendation
We’ll tell you what we think is right for you — not just what you want to hear. If both options are genuinely suitable for your case, we’ll walk through the pros and cons together so you can make an informed choice. If one is clearly the better clinical fit, we’ll explain why.
Step 5: We map out your treatment and timeline
Before you leave your consultation, you’ll have a clear picture of what treatment looks like, how long it’s likely to take, what it costs, and what happens at each stage. No surprises. No pressure.
What Happens After Treatment? Retention Matters.
This part often gets overlooked — but it’s critical. Regardless of whether you choose Invisalign or fixed braces, your teeth will naturally want to drift back toward their old positions once treatment is complete. This is called relapse, and it’s entirely preventable with proper retention.
After both Invisalign and fixed braces treatment, we provide custom-fitted retainers. These are worn nightly to hold your teeth in their new positions and protect the investment you’ve made in your smile.
Retention isn’t optional — it’s the final (and ongoing) step in orthodontic treatment. We’ll guide you through exactly how and when to wear your retainers at every stage.
What About Cost?
One of the most common questions we get is: “Is Invisalign more expensive than braces?”
The honest answer is: it varies. Both treatments are priced based on the complexity of your case and how long treatment will take — not a fixed rate. In many cases, the cost is similar between the two options.
We also offer Denticare payment plans at Vivid Dental, which allow you to spread the cost of treatment into affordable, interest-free weekly, fortnightly, or monthly payments. This means you can start treatment now rather than waiting until you’ve saved the full amount.
We accept all major health funds — including Bupa, Medibank, NIB, HCF, and HBF — and are happy to walk through your cover with you at your consultation.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can adults get Invisalign or braces?
Absolutely — and many of our adult patients do. Orthodontic treatment is effective at any age, provided your teeth and gums are healthy. Adults often prefer Invisalign for its discretion, but fixed braces remain an excellent option for adults with more complex cases.
How long does orthodontic treatment take?
Invisalign typically takes 6 to 18 months. Fixed braces generally run 12 to 24 months. Your individual timeline depends on the complexity of your case and how consistently you follow treatment guidelines (particularly important for Invisalign).
Will it hurt?
Both treatments involve some mild discomfort, particularly at the start and after adjustments or aligner changes. This is your teeth moving — a sign it’s working. Most patients describe it as pressure rather than pain, and it typically settles within a few days. Over-the-counter pain relief can help if needed.
Can I switch from braces to Invisalign (or vice versa)?
In some cases, yes — though it’s not always clinically appropriate or cost-effective. If you’re partway through treatment and reconsidering your option, book a consultation and we can assess where things stand.
What if I’ve had braces before and my teeth have shifted?
Relapse after previous orthodontic treatment is one of the most common reasons adults seek orthodontic care as adults. Both Invisalign and braces can address this, and in many cases Invisalign is very well-suited to relapse correction. A consultation will tell us which is right for your specific situation.
